CAMPAIGNING FOR CHANGE

The experience of Citizens Advice Bureaux gives us a unique, fresh insight into the problems faced by people living in the UK.

Citizens Advice collects evidence of CAB clients' problems and uses this to campaign for changes in national and local policies and services.  We have a key role in speaking up for clients, raising issues brought into bureaux, contributing to public debate and informing legislation.

Our policy/campaign work covers a huge range of issues including consumer, debt, housing, benefits, immigration, employment, legal matters and health.  We work with policymakers, regulators, MPs, Assembly Members and service providers.

PRESS RELEASE - Housing misery deepens (30 July 2008)

More than 1,100 Nottingham homes were repossessed in the first six months of this year.

Calls to Nottingham's Citizens' Advice Bureau for debt advice have risen by 21% in three months, while three times as many people are making inquires about bankruptcy.

Charities and debt organisations have said the rising cost of living has become a major problem for families.

The shocking figures come as the Evening Post starts a five-part series on the escalating problems in the economy and what people can do to cope with the credit crunch. A snapshot survey by the Post revealed:

Home repossessions in
Nottingham rose to 1,139 between January and June, compared to 850 during the same period the year before.

Nottingham CAB received 2,618 inquiries between April and June, a 21% increase on the 2,156 who called during the same period last year.

Inquiries about bankruptcy to the CAB trebled to 277 between April and June compared to 90 before

The housing market has been hit, with only 1,025 sales in Nottingham and Notts in the 12 months up until March - a fall of more than half.

Prices have rocketed, with petrol up 23p a litre, the average gas bill up by 99%, electricity up 75% and the cost of an average basket of shopping rising by £50 in June alone.

Trish Eaton, manager of the Nottingham and District Citizens Advice Bureau, said: "Now around 60% of our work is debt related."
